Video: True Womanhood

While this isn't super polished, I am totally digging the DIY sensibility of True Womanhood's song and video for "The Monk". The kids look like they know how to have a good time, and I am all for that.

Grounded on friendships going back to middle school, True Womanhood band members Thomas Redmond, Melissa Beattie and Noam Elsner play in an instinctual style that is sonically and emotionally loud. Obviously, the trio’s sound is also catchy and timeless if the press love and props from other bands including HEALTH, A Place to Bury Strangers, and Titus Andronicus is any indication.

Not everyone loves True Womanhood though, it seems. Band member Thomas Redmond explains, “We were asked to come up with a song for a World Cup compilation coming out in the UK and the country we were assigned was Slovenia. When we submitted the song it was harshly rejected for sounding like ‘a chant to the devil.’ They actually said that! We found this to be pretty amazing, but even better, the next day we heard back that the song had actually grown on them.”

Apparently, Devil chants can be endearing with time… See for yourself – check out this unreleased True Womanhood if you dare right HERE . Additionally, the band recently debuted the video for the Basement Membranes single, “The Monk.” The video was shot guerilla style throughout Washington, D.C. as documented by Brightest Young Things right HERE. Check out the tune The Monk for this addictive and melodic slice of heaven.
