One has to wonder if Bachelorette's (Annabel Alpers) third album, My Electric Family, is an extension of her single, "My Electric Husband" off of her last album The End of Things. Either way, Family is like a lullaby for robots. Alpers combines electronic elements with brass and syrupy-sweet vocals which of course, reminds me a bit of Au Revoir Simone and Stereolab.
Immediately, "Instructions for Insomniacs" has a swinging beat and the soft beauty of a California sunset by the ocean with a flute fluttering the song out like the last of the lightning bugs.
Oddly enough, the song goes into the nightmarish ominous tones of "The National Grid", whose layered vocals sound like a clock whose time is about to run out.
One of my favorite tunes off of the album is "Mindwarp" - total funkadelic disco perfect to do "the bump" to.
The rest of the songs are a bit more even-keeled, ending with "Little Bird Tell Lies" - which conjures up some nostalgia.
File this one under: great to listen to at the beach when you can people-watch and enjoy some nice weather.
