Get to Know The Locals

Have you ever gotten so carried away at a concert that you've ended up having sex on top of the lead singer's bare feet? Me neither. Of course, I haven't had the chance to see Chicago natives, The Locals, perform live before. Yvonne (guitar/vocals), Christy (bass) and Kirk (drums/backup vocals) don't put out typical baby-making-music, but Yvonne's feet have had more action than a movie starring Jackie Chan.

Unfortunately, my computer is still hungover from this weekend and won't allow for the video footage I got of the band to make its way into this post. Last week I was greeted by The Locals in their rehearsal space and got a private two-song concert as well as some quality time on their futon.

Some interesting facts:

- Kirk has run over a glazed ham in his car. It wasn't Thanksgiving or Christmas, just a regular old day and a good ham gave its life for this story.

- Christy can fold her tongue so that it looks like a piece of deli meat. It's not as nasty as it sounds and is purely genetic.

- As was alluded to above, Yvonne's feet were used as a love mattress during one of the band's shows. I forgot to ask if she had just had a pedicure - but either way it's not something I want to picture.

- Kentucky is apparently a great (if not the best) place to play a gig.

If there was only one take-away from this meet-up, it's that this band cares for each other deeply. You can tell just from the looks on their faces that they have a lot of fun spending time in the same room. It's funny how two small women and one tall guy can make such big noise.

They'll be making the rounds across the Midwest this summer but the first stop is this Thursday in Chicago - opening for queer-core faves (and Logo's 2008 winner for Brink of Fame at the New Now Next awards) The Cliks.

As if they didn't have enough going on, they've also started a really interesting project aptly called the "Big Picture Project" which you can contribute to all with the click of your cell phone camera.

Oh, and there's also this little (huge) thing Yvonne started called Sleepy Urbanite which was featured on The Today Show.

If there is any part of you that enjoys rock and pop, it's in your best interest to check out The Locals. As soon as my copy of Final Cut Pro enters a rehab clinic, I'll put the interview up here. Until then, check out the video below.
