The world may not be ready for my love of Kelly Clarkson. I cried tears of joy when this former-waitress kicked Justin Guarini's butt in the first season of American Idol. I sang along to "A Moment Like This". For Hanukkah I bought myself a copy of the American Idol Christmas album and only listened to the bonus CD featuring Kelly all by herself. She wasn't just America's sweetheart, she was mine.
Her first album out of the box was a smash hit. She was an amazingly good sport at the Metal Skool show where the foul-mouthed cover-banders hazed her in front of the entire audience. Kelly stepped up to the plate, trashed as all get out, drank Chivas straight out of a bottle; and sang "Sweet Child of Mine". She is the woman of my drinking friend dreams - that is Kelly Clarkson.
Her last album was a huge departure from her previous successes. She wanted creative control - and apparently it wasn't poppy enough for the masses. She raged against the machine and the machine didn't give a damn. The limelight has missed her and apparently the feeling is mutual. It is with hope and a little trepidation that I bring you a leak of the first single from her new album, "My Life Would Suck Without You".
It's as though she wrote this song specifically to the music industry. Just look at the lyrics:
You’re standing at my door
Guess this means you take back
What you said before
Like how much you wanted
Anyone but me
Said you’d never come back
But here you are again
Cuz we belong together now
Forever united here somehow
You got a piece of me
And honestly
My life would suck without you
Maybe I was stupid for telling you goodbye
Maybe I was wrong for tryin’ to pick a fight
I know that I’ve got issues
But you’re pretty messed up too
Anyway, I found out I’m nothing without you
Cuz we belong together now
Forever united here somehow
You got a piece of me
And honestly
My life would suck without you
Being with you is so dysfunctional
I really shouldn’t miss you, but I can’t let go
Oh yeah
Cuz we belong together now
Forever united here somehow
You got a piece of me
And honestly
My life would suck without you
Hellooooooo, it couldn't be more obvious. I'm crossing my fingers that there will be more songs akin to "Behind These Hazel Eyes" and "Since U Been Gone" which showcase her incredible singing voice. Save the electronic production messes for Brit Brit and Lady GaGa.
