Welsh musicians, People in Planes (formerly Robots in the Sky), have a new EP out and if none of the songs end up on a movie soundtrack I'll be shocked. I had heard of the band in passing but didn't do any investigating until hearing they were touring with Stereophonics, Filter and the Toadies (Sidenote: I still get ridiculously excited every time I hear Possum Kingdom).
PIP's album, "Beyond the Horizon," isn't my usual cup of Irish coffee but I've been able to listen to it in its entirety more than a few times without wanting to throw my iPod at a random stranger. It's the kind of rock that doesn't get on my nerves *cough*Nickelback *cough*. In fact, I could easily compare them to Queens of the Stone Age, Filter, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Cooper Temple Clause and Stone Temple Pilots (the "Core" album). Gareth Jones's gruff vocals are dark and melodic without being broody.
Here is their video for "Pretty Buildings" off of "Beyond the Horizon" which is a cool mixed media piece of its own.
