Cut Copy, The Presets and Kordan Concert Review

If my hangover is any indication of the amount of fun I had last night, it was one bitchin' party. I had been looking forward to seeing Cut Copy for over a year. After an incident prevented me from seeing them at Pitchfork this summer, I was ready to have my socks rocked off. Maybe it's because I always get stuck standing behind the tallest person in the audience but the energy level was a bit off for my taste. The sound was great, but too great (if that makes any sense). To put it in simple terms, they sounded too much like their pre-packaged cd. When I see a live show, I want some razzle dazzle - something new that can remind me of why I shelled out money and why I got up off of my couch. All was not lost though, the show's openers provided exactly what I was looking for.

I hadn't heard of Kordan before making my way into the packed crowd of hipsters. It has been my experience with opening bands that they may as well have their music piped in from the comfort of the green room, but notsomuch with these kids. While they have less members and a bit less stage presence than Arcade Fire, their sound was very similar.

The stars of the show (by far) were The Presets. These guys know how to party and how to get people dancing. Their sound is very similar to a heavier Cut Copy with a bit of Joy Division and The Rapture thrown in for good measure. The multi-colored light show coming from the stage was dizzying but not distracting. The energy coming from the stage was immediately picked up by the audience. It seemed as though maybe more of the crowd was there to see this band than the headliner - and I don't blame them.

If Cut Copy comes back through town and I'm not filing my dog's nails that night I'll probably give them another chance to wow me. The Presets, on the other hand, will get my undivided attention. Here's their video for My People:
