There are few exercises that strike fear in the hearts of beginners quite like running. Sure it's a great workout but you need to have the right shoes, the right stride and the right amount of space between your thighs so as to not endure the pain of chub rub.
Gyms can be overwhelming and running paths are often a nightmare for first-time runners. In the past I would have preferred shaving Robin Williams while giving him a sponge bath to going running. But now I'm willing to give it a shot thanks to the Couch to 5k.
The Couch to 5k program had me at the word "couch" - after all, it's one of my favorite places to be on this earth. Set me up there with a Law and Order: SVU marathon, a never-ending supply of tater tots, some Pibb Zero and I could probably stay on the couch for at least a week straight. The best part about this running program: you can set your own pace, do it indoors or outdoors and you start off very slowly. I find that when I try new things I am all gung-ho about it and over-do everything until I burn out a few days later. Since this program has you jogging for 60 seconds and then walking briskly for 90 seconds in your first week of training it allows your body to get used to working without giving it anxiety like characters in a Woody Allen film.
I'm not into being submissive but I do like to be told what to do when it comes to exercising. Something we can all benefit from is a trainer - add to that some great music and we've got ourselves a party. This is why I'm coming up with some podcasts to enjoy while embarking on the 5k journey. I'll be running along with the rest of you who decide to follow the routine that the good folks at Cool Running came up with. Stay tuned to Chubby Jones to download all of the podcasts as they happen.
